HEAL PARTICIPATES IN FIRST ANNUAL SURVIVORS OF
INSTITUTIONAL ABUSE CONVENTION!
Simone Jones, HEAL Kansas Coordinator, represented HEAL at the first ever annual Survivors of Institutional Abuse Convention. The event was hosted by Survivors of Institutional Abuse (SIA). And, some movement celebrities attended the event including Nick Gaglia (Writer/Director/Producer of "Over the GW"), Marcus Chatfield (Activist/Writer), and Mark Levine (Radio Host).
HEAL is very happy to have participated in this event! Simone Jones hosted a HEAL information table and distributed literature and buttons to survivors attending the event!
The main purpose of the SIA Convention was to provide a time for healing for those of us who have been abused in residential programs and homes. Survivors of Straight, Inc., WWASPS, Heritage School, Devereux Foundation, New Bethany Home for Girls, Victory Christian Academy, and many others attended the convention.
The events at the convention included panel discussions, survivor testimonies, book signings, film showings, guest speakers (including Alexia Parks, author of "An American Gulag"), dedication ceremonies, award ceremonies, and a memorial for children who died in programs and/or after leaving the programs due to the trauma endured in the programs.
