independent educational consultant (ed cons) association

(IECA)

*HEAL is not affiliated with the IECA and provides the following as information only.

(Hey, Ivy-Leaguers and Legitimate Schools and Professionals, Cult-Leaders are Using Their Association with YOU to Establish a Guise of Credibility so THEY can Defraud Families and Torture Children--Sounds Like You May Want To Sue)

The IECA claims to be independent, but, a look at their donors and associations as well as their policies regarding allowing programs to self-refer while acting as active members of the IECA, tells a far different story.  The IECA began as an association that referred solely to troubled teen programs and arguably only added college referrals to their repertoire in order to aid in creating the appearance of legitimacy for what has proven to be a fraudulent, corrupt, and often criminal enterprise (the behavior modification industry).

In our research, we have found only two members who may be able to shed light on the founding of the IECA and those behind this "public face" for the behavior modification industry ( http://www.educationalconsulting.org/PDF/IECA_AtRisk_Brochure.pdf (July 19th, 2010)).  Faith Howland is a founding member of the IECA and has been with the IECA since 1976.  Ms. Howland focuses on placing children in "independent" programs and schools.  Her area of "expertise" does not include college placement, but, her business partners claim a focus on higher education.  She is listed here: http://ourtroubledteen.com/school.php?sid=2618 and this site refers primarily to WWASPS.  WWASPS is so notoriously abusive that it inspired the recent congressional hearings and legislative action (HR 911, Stop Child Abuse in Residential Programs Act of 2009).  The fact that Ms. Howland is the only founding member HEAL can locate regarding the IECA, suggests they are trying to hide their history.  The only other long-term member HEAL can locate through public sources is Suzanne F. Scott.  Ms. Scott is associated with The Glenholme School (  http://www.theglenholmeschool.org/edconsul.htm ) and, http://ourtroubledteen.com/school.php?sid=2588 (July 19th, 2010) which primarily refers to WWASPS and other notoriously abusive facilities.

Unlike other organizations, the IECA does not provide a "history" page regarding their founders and their actions over time.  They limit their coverage to the last 2-3 years.  For an association that "celebrates" over 30 years of service, one would think they would want to highlight their successes over those decades, not hide them.  This adds to our concerns regarding their primary agenda.  It seems they manipulate language and forgive their own misdeeds while working as pimps for the behavior modification industry.  You will see that current president of the IECA, Dodge Johnson, is for breaching professional ethics in allowing program staff to state they are independent educational consultants while referring to their own programs.  He states, "“Scott Jaschick [author of the Higher Ed article] is quite right that the IECA does not forbid dual relationships, provided they are open — not secret or “an open secret.” Many of our members are admissions officers or school counselors who decided to make a change — retire, relocate, be more independent, work at their own schedule. And, not surprisingly, they often want to keep their ‘day job’ until it’s clear that consulting is truly what they want and that they can make a go of it." (http://www.insidehighered.com/news/2008/03/10/nacac#Comments)   It is highly likely that there is no active enforcement regarding guidelines except for an occasional wrist-slap for the sole purpose of appearing ethical while allowing their lead donors (guilty of wrongful death and/or other torts/crimes) to use their "name" to promote abusive and fraudulent programs and practices.

In addition, the IECA is a 501(c)3 non-profit and seems in violation of IRS guidelines by granting donated funds to donors and sponsors of their "charity".  This is a serious concern that is addressed repeatedly below.

Below is a table with the current list of donors and sponsors of the "Independent Educational Consultant Association".  We are including names, business names, and relevant associations.  We believe this will provide ample evidence regarding the sham that is the IECA and similar organizations who act as tax shelters and/or money-launderers for unscrupulous facilities and programs.

Associate, Bernie Zimmerman is an active "therapist" at Cherry Gulch program in Idaho and got that job in addition to his "referral career" and after the fact.  Now, above, Dodge Johnson states that the dual employment occurs when someone working at a facility is thinking about trying out referrals and that is why they accept it.  But, in this case, you see Mr. Zimmerman was an Ed Con and THEN decided to be a program staffer as well.

"Bernie Zimmerman MA, NCC, LCPC, has accepted a position as a Program Therapist at Cherry Gulch. For the last four years Bernie has been an Educational Consultant for Greenwood Associates in Florida. Mount Bachelor Education Center, Inc.

aka Mount Bachelor Academy (a now closed Aspen Education Group program)
A Prineville education center will close by Dec. 9, costing between 69 and 72 workers their jobs.

Mount Bachelor Educational Center Inc. provided consulting services for elementary and secondary schools. It was founded in 1988.

The company announced the closure in a Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification Act warning to the state’s Department of Community Colleges and Workforce Development.

It was the third so-called “WARN” alert since Oct. 6.

Wholesale plumbing products distributor Ferguson Enterprises Inc. said last month it is closing its Portland accounting center and laying off 94 employees. Sun Microsystems laid off 42 workers last week.

The alerts are generally filed when a company with fewer than 500 employees lays off one-third or more of its workforce.

Oregon's unemployment rate is 11.5 percent, the fourth-highest in the country.

A Prineville education center will close by Dec. 9, costing between 69 and 72 workers their jobs.

Mount Bachelor Educational Center Inc. provided consulting services for elementary and secondary schools. It was founded in 1988.  (Really?  We thought it was a behavior modification program.  Hmmm...  Something fishy here, for sure.)

It was the third so-called “WARN” alert since Oct. 6.

McCracken and Ira Lott, two more board members, regularly receive grants to experiment on children and the disabled.  James T. McCracken assisted with the testing of atomoxetine on children likely misdiagnosed with ADHD (when improper socialization, attention, and diet were likely causes of issues).  Now, the atomoxetine is commercially sold as Strattera.  You can learn all about that here.  Basically, in this industry we see time and again unethical scientists looking for subjects easily controlled and manipulated due to their poverty and/or ignorance.  This is unacceptable.  Mario Pascale is an Educational consultant, also working at the Independence Center who also sits on the National Council of US-Arab relations.  Why is it that so many "child experts" are involved in international relations?  Why do the Congressional Hearings compare the treatment of American youth in behavior modification programs to the torture of prisoners in Abu Ghraib and Guantanamo Bay?  Why do so many services share experiment/research data with the government?  All questions we should all be asking and demanding answers for...  At this point, we think we have covered enough of the "Independence Center".

Steven Mercer Mercer Educational Consulting in CA Gives at least $1 to IECA annually.  Formerly worked at Youth Challenge International in Costa Rica and The Rocky Mountain School of Expeditionary Learning.  The YCI claims this about their programs:

"But it's not a vacation - volunteers live under the most basic conditions in remote locations with little in the way of amenities. And the work schedules can be demanding, challenging youth to tap into hidden personal resources to achieve results."

A comment online about Rocky Mountain School:

"My neighbor’s daughter is in kindergarten at RMSEL and they LOVE it. The program fosters independence — she’s already been on a 3+ day camping trip without mom & dad!"

The problem with the above review is that 5 year-olds should not be expected to be independent.  This is reinforcing the idea that parents do not need to be active participants in their children's lives to succeed.  It is unnatural and fosters an anti-social attitude and results in sociopathic tendencies in many circumstances.

Hillside School IECA "Diamond Level Sponsor" Credited with donating $100,000 to IECA.  If a school gives an "independent educational referral" association $100,000, can that association really be considered "independent"?
Second Nature Wilderness IECA "Leadership" Sponsor The issue here is that the IECA seems to, at will, change the terms they use for their donors/sponsors and the relevance of the titles of the different levels of sponsorship and donation.  It suggests an intent to hide facts that should be available given the nature of this organization.
