M., a former staff of Teen Challenge of New Mexico worked at the Adolescent
Girl Center, here is M's statement (submitted August 22nd, 2009):
"Please always keep in mind that many of the staff are people with a deep passion to help people and make many sacrifices monetarily and with their time. There are also some Teen Challenges that are not abusive. I went to a Teen Challenge in North Carolina when I was 16 (25 years ago, I have no idea what it is like now). I am so thankful for the help they gave me. They definitely push a relationship with Christ, but that was helpful to me. I am a Christian although I do not adhere to all of the Assembly of God beliefs. Without the help they gave I donít know where I would be today. That is part of why it is difficult to respond to this. There are people who have nowhere else to go and came out of a worse situation than what the experience at TC.
After finishing HS I worked at Teen Challenge for 10 (Over 12 years ago) years and saw many abuses. I was still troubled in many ways and was easily manipulated by the directors. It troubles me that I was a part of the abuse. I thought I was doing what I was suppose to do and what would help the girls. Discipline included cleaning a dumpster out with a tooth brush, being on talking restrictions (not being a loud to speak to other students for sometimes long periods of time). The living conditions were terrible. Girls and staff were demeaned and made to feel worthless if they were not a golden girl that week. Any time anyone disagreed or questioned the directors they were told they were disobeying God. They manipulated the Word of God to suit their needs. They would control staff and students in every way. Students were made to feel like they had to stay on as staff after graduation. I could go on and on. As I grew as a person and spiritually I realized what they were doing was wrong I stayed to help the girls and try to shield them as much as I could as did 2 other staff members until we just couldnít do it anymore. When we left we went to Assembly of God officials and National Teen Challenge, but they didnít do anything.
You can see that I would not want my name associated with Teen Challenge so please be careful about putting staff names out there."
