| King George School Closing Amy Ash Nixon Staff Writer SUTTON -- High school graduations always bring mixed feelings, but for the King George School Class of 2011, the June 4 graduation will be the school's last day. The therapeutic boarding school will shut for good at the end of the semester, school officials confirmed Friday. The school is owned by Universal Health Services Inc. in King of Prussia, Penn., which bought the school during bankruptcy proceedings in 2005. A phone call to Universal Health Services on Friday was not returned. Efforts to speak with the present head of school, Gerard Jones, in the past week have not been successful. A request for information about the number of students at the school was not answered. However, Jones said 35 people would be losing their jobs. Information provided to the school community earlier this week, according to staff member Lisa Goodell, stated, "Since its founding in the late 1990s, the King George School has delivered the highest level of academic and therapeutic services to bright and creative students from throughout North America. "In recent years, the school has been unsuccessful in consistently sustaining student enrollment levels necessary to maintain the financial viability of the program, without compromising the quality of the education, therapeutic services and vibrant community life necessary to support our students. "For the remaining four weeks of the current semester, there will be no change in any aspect of the King George program," school officials promised. School officials say staff will create comprehensive individual transition plans and treatment recommendations for each student. Dr. Karen E. Fitzhugh, former head of the King George School, said Friday she was deeply saddened by the news. She became head of school in 2004. King George has been in business since 1999, said Fitzhugh. She is in the process of establishing a private school for young women in the town of Peacham. "I haven't been [at King George School] for almost four years," Fitzhugh said Friday. She said with a school that depends on referrals, it can be difficult to sustain the enrollment needed to make the numbers work financially. "When you don't have enough students, there is a certain point where you have to make a decision," she said. "It has to be really difficult." Regarding Universal Health Services Inc., Fitzhugh had the highest regard for how they have worked to keep the school open and serving its mission. "They have stood behind the school for an extended period and weathered the ups and downs," she said. "I know I've got some blood, sweat and tears in the soil up there." When the bankruptcy occurred on her watch, not long after she took the job after moving from Texas, her family helped make payroll, lending some of the proceeds from the sale of their own home in Texas to keep the school afloat while trying to figure out how not to be forced to close during the former owner's bankruptcy and ordered liquidation. Fitzhugh said the looming First Wind project, which will encircle the school "in a horseshoe" with 16 more than 400-foot tall turbines, is no small piece of the equation either. The King George School has been one of the appellants in the fight against the wind farm. The wind farm will forever alter the landscape around the school, set in a scenic location with beautiful views, Fitzhugh said. "Were sorry to learn that the school is closing," First Wind Communications Director John Lamontagne. "Our project was reviewed and approved by the Vermont Public Service Board. It was determined at that time the project would not have any effect on the school. Any insinuation to the contrary by opponents of clean energy is ridiculous." A check at the Sutton Town Clerk's office on Friday showed that the school, which has 174 acres and is among its largest taxpayers, this year paid $50,308.64 in taxes and its share of the town's tax base is 3.08 percent.
