“TREATMENT" CENTERS FOR CHILDREN AND YOUNG
ADULTS in need of further investigation!
(Watch the Congressional Hearing)
Video: PBS--"Who's Watching the Kids?"
***VISIT THE SURVIVOR MESSAGE FORUM!***
The residential
treatment and wilderness "therapy" programs have been
denounced by the National Institute of Health as being harmful to
children and families as well as ineffective in dealing with teen
problems. There are multiple resources that expose the fraud and
abuse of this industry. Some authors to check out are Dr. Peter
Breggin, Alexia Parks, and Maia Szalavitz. Dr. Peter Breggin is
author of mutiple books regarding appropriate treatment for teens
(see Reclaiming Our Children by Dr. Peter Breggin). Alexia Parks
authored "An American Gulag" exposing the "teen
help" industry and Maia Szalavitz has written two great books
exposing the fraud and abuse inherent in this industry, "Tough
Love America" and "Help at Any Cost".
We suggest parents do
not remove their children from their home environment unless they
pose an immediate threat to themselves or others. Leading expert in
adolescent psychology and head of the Department of Psychology at
the University of California--Berkeley, Dr. Margaret Singer
(deceased-2003), has
spoken out against these programs in great detail saying that they
make a child's worst nightmare of abandonment come true and that the
people who run these programs are slick businessmen with no training
or expertise in helping teens appropriately. Maia Szalavitz, author
of "Tough Love America", cites the National Institute of
Health studies on these programs that have determined that they are
harmful and not helpful to teens or their families. Szalavitz also
stated on the Jan. 18th, 2005 episode of Montel Williams that even
when children/teens pose an immediate threat to themselves or others
that at most a short stay (1-4 weeks) in a local psychiatric
hospital to deescalate the situation is what is needed followed by
intensive out-patient family counseling.
We
recommend no one send children to a facility that matches any of the
criteria on our warning signs list at www.heal-online.org/warn.htm.
If you are a survivor of one of these programs or otherwise
interested in exposing fraudulent and abusive “treatment” centers
or wilderness camps, please
contact
us. For more information on this issue visit:
http://www.heal-online.org/teen.htm. On the
HEAL website you will find links to lawsuits, news articles, and
survivor websites detailing the abuses experienced at these
facilities. Also, please
take a moment to read the open letter quoting government and private
entities with their true intentions in these matters by visiting www.beyondbusiness.net/openletter.htm.
It is imperative that you DO NOT send your child to an out of
state behavior modification program.
It is imperative that you DO NOT send your child to any program
that limits or denies contact between you and your child at any point in their stay at the facility. It
is imperative that you DO NOT send your child to a facility that you
yourself will not be monitoring on at least a weekly basis in person
to monitor the treatment and well being of your child.
Be responsible, for the sake of your children. If you or your family were defrauded, abused, and/or subjected to human and civil rights
violations, please get legal assistance now.
The statute of limitations varies from state to state. You have a limited time to file a claim.
For a list of attorneys and attorney referral services that can
help you in your pursuit of justice, click
here. Also, we believe ALL programs outside of the US are suspect and ask that you read the U.S. State Department’s warning regarding international programs by clicking here. They have softened the warning from the original. We believe this is due to the corruption in the State Department, Justice Department, and the White House. Do not, under any circumstances, risk your child’s life in a program outside of the U.S.
HEAL is not a referral service. We do not advocate placement of children in unregulated, private, behavior modification programs or facilities. Please do not contact us for referrals or approval of your subjecting a child to this corrupt and destructive industry.

you are unable to find the answers you are looking for, please visit: www.heal-online.org/help.htm
Following
is a “work in progress” list of behavior modification programs that
HEAL has yet to research/investigate and/or that are located outside
of the United States.
If you have survived an abusive behavior modification program,
please
contact
us and tell us your experience.
We will post your experience and details about the facility on
this website. We can
protect your identity
if you so desire. Understand that this is an incomplete list and that it is your
responsibility to look heavily into the program(s) which you consider
placing your child into. Some of
the programs listed below are international programs that have been
found to be abusive. And, some are programs which have been
investigated and determined to be abusive by other organizations.
We have added links and brief details where applicable regarding
known abuses and reports. To view the programs we have yet to
investigate, but, are aware of, scroll down the page:
ACE (Associated Counseling and Education)--Unable to locate. May be closed or exist under new name. Please contact us with any info on this program.
Alberta Adolescent Recovery Center (AARC)--Reportedly a spin-off of the notoriously abusive Straight, Inc. See: http://www.isaccorp.org/aarc.asp AARC is confirmedly abusive. For more info, visit www.stopaarc.org. Also see: http://www.facebook.com/?ref=tn&sk=messages#!/event.php?eid=117995894895606. On May 27th, 2010, citizens protested AARC. Here are a few pictures from that event (click facebook link above for more info):
Amelia Christian Academy--Located in Amelia, VA. This program employs former Roloff Home/New Bethany Home for Boys & Girls (Trudy Arbitelle). Please contact us with any information on this program.
AMIkids, Inc.--Multiple Locations, HQ'd in Tampa, FL. (other locations include: Florida, Illinois, Georgia, Louisiana, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Texas, and Virginia (multiple cities in each state) They claim to help troubled teens and to run dozens of programs across the country. Please contact us with any information on these programs.
Anne Elizabeth Shepherd Home--It is located in Columbus, GA. Please contact us with any info on this program.
ARLC in Florida. This facility is reportedly abusive. Please contact us with any info on this program.
Archway Academy in Houston, TX. It is an experimental charter school that "caters to recovering alcoholics and drug addicts". They use a point and level system similar to that used at Provo Canyon School and state that children have to earn the right to go to school. (http://www.chron.com/disp/story.mpl/metropolitan/6740907.html) This program is suspect. Please contact us with any information on this program.
Brandon Hall School--Located in Atlanta, GA. Brandon Hall School employs John Singleton who got his start in Aspen Education Group programs. Based on their hiring practices, we do have concerns about this program. Please contact us with any information on this program.

Cayuga Home for
Children's Franklin Recovery Residence in Auburn, NY.
The Franklin Recovery Residence will be the third recovery unit
of the agency, with two others in cottages on the main campus on
Hamilton Avenue, chief executive officer Edward Myers Hayes
said. Franklin will provide 10 additional recovery beds with 23
others on the main campus, totaling 33 in all...The program uses
evidence-based recovery techniques to provide support services.
During the last few weeks of placement children are sometimes
placed in 12-step programs in their own communities, Hayes said.
“Outcomes happen after our work is done,” he said, with
follow-up care done “on our own initiative.” It is not required.
He noted that Cayuga County Home's approach is research based.
and he praised Monroe County's study of functional therapy...
Many programs are falsifying data to claim
they are using evidence-based treatment. We will need to
review the studies or providers of the "scientific data".
Also, praising a study is not an admission of utilizing the
technique praised. And,
Straight, Inc. often enrolled "graduates" in outside 12-step
programs as part of the program. Please
contact us with any information on this program.
Colton At-Risk Teens Academy--Located in Colton/Walnut Creek, CA. This program is operated by the Colton Police Department. It is a free program that has classes every Saturday from January through May. This is not a residential program. Please contact us with any info on this program.
Belle Glade--Unable to locate. May be closed or exist under new name. Please contact us with any info on this program.
Big City Mountaineers--in Denver, CO (headquarters). This appears to only be a week-long or so backpacking trip. Please contact us with any info on this wilderness program.
Bluegrass ChalleNGe Academy--Located in Eastern Kentucky. This is related to the ChalleNGe Academies run by the National Guard. Please contact us with any information on this program. For staff and background info, click here.
Boys and Girls Republic--Located in Detroit, MI. Please contact us with any info on this program. There is not much information available on this program. They run an on-site charter school that is operated by Farmington Public Schools. For staff and background info, click here.
Bridges Career Development Academy, The--Located in Bakersfield, CA. Please contact us with any info on this program. This program claims to be accredited by the US Office of Education. However, if you visit the US Department (not Office) of Education (which is the site linked to on this "school's" website), there is no listing for schools accredited by the Department of Education and if you visit http://nces.ed.gov/globallocator/ (college locator for colleges recognized by the US Department of Education) you will not find Bridges or Los Angeles Trade Tech College listed as recognized schools. This is most likely a scam.
Casa Valle--Located in Arizona. Staff at confirmedly abusive program, Gatehouse Academy, are associated with Casa Valle. Please contact us with any information on this program. This program may be closed or operating under a new name.
Chief Ken Hill Learning Academy Located in S. Chandler, AZ. This is a residential program that uses a "Positive Peer Culture" model. Positive Peer Culture is scientifically proven to be ineffective and harmful. Please contact us with any info on this program.
Cocoon House--Located in Everett, WA is a residential "disciplinary" program for homeless youth. Please contact us with any info on this program. For staff and background info, click here.
Copper Hills Youth Center--It
is located in W. Jordan, UT.
HEAL recommends no parent subject any child to any program in
Utah as Utah is corrupt and refuses to regulate or take action
against confirmedly abusive programs such as WWASPS, Provo Canyon School, Sorenson's Ranch, etc...
Don't send your kid to UT!
East Mountain School--Located in New Mexico. Associated under larger umbrella of programs known as the New Mexico Boys and Girls Ranch Foundation, Inc. Please contact us with any info on this program.

HEAL has received multiple reports of torture at this facility including the mangling of children's hands in pick-axe "accidents". Please do not send your child to this program! For staff and background information, click here.
Family Solutions Foundation--Located in Taylor/Snowflake, Arizona. This program is modeling itself after Teen Challenge and uses fear instead of reason and love to "sell" parents on its approach. We recommend you avoid any program that models itself after a confirmedly abusive program. This program is not operational at this time (August 29th, 2009). They are luring people to give money so they can profit and build their cult. Please do not donate to this scam/cult. On their website, they do not list one name as an individual to contact. This is a scam. Do not participate or support it. We hope it never gets off the ground, but, if it does, you will find their staff information if you click here in the future.
Family Support Services--Located nationwide. This new "service" is suspected of funneling kids into unregulated, private prisons where innumerable human rights violations regularly occur. It is the privatization of "corrections" and it is a threat to family unity. Lon Woodbury (CEDU/Struggling Teens.com) backs this new change to the juvenile justice system. And, that is definitely a bad sign. Beyond this, some of these services already openly associate with abusive programs. For instance, Family Support Services in Utah are partnered with the United Way of Utah. The United Way of Utah refers to Provo Canyon School. Provo Canyon School is confirmedly abusive. So, reasons abound for not "buying the hype" on this "new improved" justice system for youth. Please contact us with any info on these programs and/or their referral placements.
Fort Gordon's Youth ChalleNGe Academy--Located in Augusta, GA. This is a program operated by the US National Guard. Please contact us with any info on this program. For staff and background info, click here.

child to any program in Utah as Utah is corrupt and refuses to
regulate or take action against confirmedly abusive programs
such as WWASPS, Provo Canyon School, Sorenson's Ranch, etc...

See: "The Ranch Program at Salem encompasses troubled teens with an environment of biblical truth," says a statement on the Salem Web site. "Structure, discipline, accountability, and teaching promote spiritual, emotional, intellectual, social, and physical development. Daily chores centered on the care of horses are woven into a schedule of diligent education to build values and integrity." (Journal Star, April 7th, 2008) The language used suggests a cult-like structure and HEAL would generally advise against such an environment.

The Waldorf Schools--Located around the globe and the United States. There are a few problems we've found in their questionnaires/application forms. They ask for unqualified persons (i.e. English teachers, parents) to answer questions about mental health and/or behavior in an evaluative format which is an unprofessional manner to establish the needs of any child. They ask parents what behaviors they'd like to see removed from their child and what behaviors the parents would like to see their child exhibit. This suggests it is a behavior modification program. There are so many of these facilities and they claim to use a "spiritual" guidance/discipline based on Rudolf Steiner's work. "Over a period of 40 years, he formulated and taught a path of inner development or spiritual research he called, "anthroposophy."" This suggests a cult-like facility or group of schools. Walker School located in Needham, MA. One problem HEAL has is the use of experimental medication on children attending the facility, see: http://www.blackwell-synergy.com/doi/abs/10.1111/j.1744-6171.2003.00123.x?cookieSet=1&journalCode=jcap. See the side effects of Bupropion SR (Wellbutrin)at: http://www.rxlist.com/cgi/generic/wellbutrin_sr_ad.htm and it is apparently not recommended for people under 24-years old as it can increase suicidal thoughts. See: http://health.yahoo.com/depression-medications/bupropion-oral/healthwise--d00181a1.html HEAL is opposed to the use of children in experiments as it violates the Nuremberg Code and basic human rights. Based on this alone, we currently find Walker to be unethical and would recommend you not place a child in their care.

HEAL recommends no parent subject any
child to any program in Utah as Utah is corrupt and refuses to
regulate or take action against confirmedly abusive programs

White River Academy uses "Positive
Peer Culture" (a.k.a. Confrontational Therapy--denounced by
mainstream psychology and psychiatry as harmful and damaging)
which is a cult/brainwashing technique. Based on this
and the fact that it is in cult-central, Utah, we say "just
say no". Don't send your kid to UT!

Youth Reach Located in Alabama/Gulf Coast. Our concern is that even people who've gone through the program credit the program with "building" them into the individuals they've become. This is a red flag because it shows that it does not empower youth to be independent thinkers or help children recognize their own worth. ""It taught me how to be a responsible person. They taught me honesty, integrity, built me into a person that really wants to make a difference in the world," said Mayfield." Please contact us with any info on this program.
